Intro to Library Acquisitions

This is a guide for Library Selectors and Users to understand how Library Acquisitions works

Adding and dropping Serials, Periodicals, and Journals (Print and Electronic)

Serials, Periodical, and Journals in all formats are added and dropped once a year, around September first.  If you wish to add a title, you will need to voluntarily drop enough titles from the same fund to cover the cost of the new title.  If you wish to drop titles in more than one fund to cove the cost, that will need to be done with the agreement of the selector responsible for that fund.

As is more likely in our current budgetary situation, the Collections Coordinator and the Acquisitions Librarian begin review current titles as soon as the statistical data from the previous year is available.  Based on this review and budget information from the library administration, a possible cut list is developed.  This list is ideally two to three times larger than we expect to need.  This list is given to the selectors for their input, after which the list is again adjusted.  This final list of possible cuts is then held until the next year's budget is confirmed and the exact size of the cut is determined.  By this time it is usually summer, and the Acquisition's Librarian, in conjunction with the Head of Reference and Research Services will develop a final cut list.  If time allows, this list will be presented to the selectors when they return to campus before the renewals are submitted to our periodical vendors.
