How to do Library Research for History Day Topics

1. Start with secondary sources.

2. Revise your questions based upn the information you find in the secondary sources.

3. Search for primary sources.

4. Revise your questions again, based upon the information you find in the primary sources.

5. Return to the secondary sources if you need to.

6. ALWAYS write down all of the information you need to cite any material you collect!

Things to Keep in Mind About the Judges

1. Judges check the bibliography carefully.  They are looking for a wide range of sources (books journals, newspapers, audio and video recordings, etc.) both primary and secondary sources, and the use of appropriate sources.  If you use websites, identify the sponsors or creators of those sites.

2. Judges check to make sure you cite your sources.

3. Judges check your use of sources.  Do not use anything (photographs, etc.) unless there is a good reason for doing so.

4. Judges may ask not only what you have learned, but also how your ideas about your topic have changed.

5. Judges are interested in seeing if you cover both sides of a controversial topic.  Provide evidence to back up your side, and make sure you counter any arguments from the other side.

6. Judges are interested in hearing about the decisions you made along the way, including any difficulties you overcame.

7. Judges want you to be clear about placing your topic in its historical context.
