Citation Management Programs

Below, we will briefly introduce a variety of tools you may find useful to help with citing and managing your resources. For many people, these tools relieve some of the anxiety they feel about citing their sources, and allow them the mental space to craft excellent work. However, these tools should be used with caution. There is no perfect program, and sometimes these tools make mistakes in citations.

Please remember to proofread your references page and double-check your in-text citations BEFORE you turn in the final draft of your assignment.

There are many well-regarded citation management resources available online. These typically have free and paid versions. Most students get what they need just fine with the free versions. Some of the most popular are briefly outlined below.

Please note: The library provides links and brief summaries for several programs that are popular on the NMSU campus for informational purposes here, but librarians are not experts in these platforms and cannot provide help troubleshooting or technical support. For this reason, we have provided links to tutorials and contact information for these programs below.

Endnote

One of the many resources you have access to through the NMSU Library is Endnote Basic. The Library has a subscription to the paid version of Endnote through Web of Science. As a current NMSU student, faculty, or staff member you are entitled to use this subscription for FREE. If Endnote interests you, you'll find more specific information in the tab below this one called "Citation Management with EndNote Basic."

Your Microsoft Word actually has citation management options available in the References tab. As with most Microsoft Office programs, the Help feature and the various online tutorials break this down quite well.
