The Rio Grande Historical Collections (RGHC) secured funding to acquire rare and unique research materials that document the cultural heritage and experiences of people and groups of New Mexico and the borderlands region. With the Southwest and Border Cultures Institute (SBCI) funding, the RGHC recently acquired a photograph album (RG2024-001) containing 78 black and white photographic prints of El Paso, Texas, and Madero Camp.

The rare photograph album spans from 1906-1916, and as you turn the pages there you will discover scenes of historic El Paso, Texas depicting street scenes to photographs illustrating the Mexican Revolution, Fort Bliss barracks, Francisco Madero's campsite, and the Columbus, New Mexico vicinity. The album depicts military activity and Mexican soldiers are shown armed along a rugged desert terrain and in addition, the U.S. Red Cross personnel aiding soldiers. Aside from scenes illustrating El Paso, there are remote scenes that consist of Francisco Madero’s campsite and images of Columbus, N.M. before the 1916 raid.

Those who are interested in viewing the photo album, please visit the Caroline E. Stras Research Room located at the Branson Library, 4th floor. The reading room is open Monday-Friday 9 am – 4 pm and remember to check for upcoming closures before dropping in to view our unique holdings.
