The New Mexico State University Library will host a special event in celebration of Sunshine Week. A panel discussion on the role the opinion pages in local print media plays in shaping community dialogue will take place on Thursday, March 28 from 3-4p.m. in the Branson Library 4th Floor Casad & Evangeline Smith Mandell Gallery (1305 Frenger Mall). The event is free and open to the public.

The event will feature a panel discussion of the purpose and importance of the opinion pages of local print media. The speakers will include four journalists who either produce content for or edit their publication’s op-ed pages. The panel will discuss the role of opinion writing in creating community dialogue and promoting change, along with the value of providing space for diverse viewpoints.

Panelists include:

Sunshine Week is a national initiative held each March to promote the importance of open government and the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy.  Launched in 2005 by the American Society of News Editors, now News Leaders Association, the week features published articles, opinion columns, and public seminars and forums held across the country that argue government operates in the interest of its citizens when it does so in the open.  While Sunshine Week normally coincides with National Freedom of Information Day on March 16, however, due to NMSU spring break, this event is pushed back to March 28 to allow for student participation.

The library will also open an exhibit of the editorial cartoons of Bob Diven, recently retired editorial cartoonist of the Las Cruces Sun-News, who donated his original drawings to the library’s archive in 2023.

This program is made possible by generous financial support from Tim Parker, and sponsored by the New Mexico State University Library and the Department of Journalism & Media Studies. For information regarding parking at NMSU, visit park.nmsu.edu.
