Archival Collections Newly Digitized

Within the NMSU Library, the Archives and Special Collections (ASC) Department collaborated with the Metadata Unit in the Technical Services Department to digitize 14 collections, each now available through the NMSU Digital Collections homepage. The diverse collections on view include Rio Grande History, a past publication of the Rio Grande Historical Collections (RGHC), postcards, scrapbooks, albums, WWII posters, broadsides and event posters, along with a wide range of historical photographs relating to the state of New Mexico and the U.S-Mexico borderlands. The digitization of the archival and special collections material was made possible by the NMSU COVID19 Performance Fund granted to the NMSU Library by the U.S. Department of Education, Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) in December 2021.

The digitized collections now available are:

HEERF student, Oscar Garcia, scanning archival material.

HEERF student, Renae Hunt, creating metadata.

One of the goals of this grant project was to engage NMSU students in learning about the versatility of digital collections through their active participation in the collections’ development. Based on their hands-on experience in digitizing and curating archival materials, students had an opportunity to understand the importance of access to reliable sources, see the potential for analyzing real data, and reflect on the preservation efforts of their own cultural legacy.

The newly digitized content improves users’ ability to discover images, learn more about holdings, and browse collections. The digital surrogates have significant anticipated use by researchers who cannot make it to ASC, and they bolster the library’s growing body of online archival materials pertinent to the borderland region.

Please make sure to check out the NMSU Digital Collections homepage periodically as additional collections are uploaded!
